Food finds: Yummy chicken kebabs

I LOVE to try new dishes. As often as I have time I look for recipes with great reviews and give them a go. I tried my hand at this Chicken Kebab recipe and paired it with garlic potatoes and cobettes. It was delicious. It had the glorious, euphoric feel of an outdoor summer barbecue, except that it was indoors, at night.

I did double the recipe for the sauce just to give it that extra punch, and rather than a grill I used one of the racks in the oven and it worked perfectly for me.

Curly hair, don’t care

I’m always in a bit of a bind after the first two weeks post-relaxer. My hair isn’t as flat and straight any more, but I’m trying not to use heat. My only other alternative? Curls! Thus far I’ve tried a number of options for heatless curls and I’ve found that some work better at different stages post-relaxer. For me, bantu knots work wonders when I’m no longer completely straight but the new growth hasn’t set in yet. Bantu knots give me a bigger, more wavy curl than flexi rods or braids outs, but I find that they take longer to set at night and don’t come out as bouncy if you don’t use a moisturizer when setting them. I secure them with hair pins and cover my head with my satin bonnet. In the morning I rub some coconut oil on my fingers before taking them down. Finally, I finger comb to conceal the parts and style as desired. Voilà! Big, beautiful wavy curls (and it’s considered a low manipulation style…. score!)

Becoming a Lady Part 1 (Mani-Day!)

Image

As I’ve gotten older I’ve realised how it’s the little things that make the lady. You don’t have to be wearing a designer suit or diamond necklace to look fly and fabulous. Just keeping yourself well kempt goes a long way in portraying an image of someone who puts a lot of time and effort into her appearance.

One of the things that I think really makes me look kempt and complete is a regular manicure. However, for me, having healthy nails is most important.

People often see my nails and think they’re acrylics and that’s for a couple of (inexpensive) reasons: Continue reading

Another Blog?

Yes!

Often times we are viewed based on the roles people give us: mother, daughter, sister, accountant, dentist, Christian, and the list goes on. With these labels comes the pressure of wanting to live in line with them– to be the best mother or dentist. With this blog, I’m inviting everyone to put down their every day identities and enjoy a free space where you don’t have to be anything or anyone.

In the world’s eyes I’m a word-smith. As a journalism college graduate, media and communications graduate student, award winning literary artist, published author, former magazine editor and current public relations manager, who can blame them? But I want to take a step away from the pen and talk about the other things that I love, fashion, design, culture, relationships etc. I’m going to let loose and choose the labels I want. And I invite you to come and share about the things that mean the most to you.
